Madoka Magica confirmed to return in 2026 with new theatrical film

Aniplex has officially announced the release window for the new film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising.
This new movie is a direct sequel to the 2013 film Rebellion, which itself followed the groundbreaking 2011 television anime series.

The original Puella Magi Madoka Magica is famous for its dark deconstruction of the “magical girl” genre, exploring themes of sacrifice, despair, and the grim consequences of making magical contracts.

The ending of the Rebellion movie was highly divisive and left the story on a major cliffhanger, making this upcoming sequel one of the most discussed and anticipated projects in anime for over a decade.

To accompany the announcement, a second key visual and a new promotional trailer for the film have been released.

Advance movie tickets are also set to go on sale shortly, which will feature the new key visual artwork and will come with a special clear file as a bonus purchase gift.

The price for the advance ticket bundle is 1,600 yen.

In the lead-up to the new film’s premiere, a re-edited version of the previous movies will be broadcast on television in Japan.

The first two films, Beginnings and Eternal, which recap the original TV series, will be recompiled into a “TV Edition.”

This new broadcast will air on the MBS/TBS network nationwide on Sundays at 5:00 PM.
This strategy is designed to re-familiarize audiences with the story ahead of the new movie’s release.
The Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV Edition is scheduled to begin broadcasting in October of this year.

The advance tickets for the new film will go on sale at participating theaters from Friday, July 18th.

The new theatrical movie, Walpurgisnacht: Rising, is scheduled to be released in February 2026.

A trailer for the new movie has also been added to YouTube, showing fans what they can expect from the next installment in the series.
In addition to the upcoming new movie, a free-to-play role-playing game Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra was launched earlier this year on iOS and Android and will now launch for PC via the Steam platform this week.
