Life-sized time machine appears in Akihabara for Steins;Gate anniversary
A new pop-up exhibition celebrating the 15th anniversary of the popular science-adventure game STEINS;GATE has opened in the Akihabara district of Tokyo.
The event, titled “STEINS;GATE 15th Anniversary POPUP Exhibition ~Beyond 15 Years of Time. The if Worldline~,” launched today, Monday, the 28th of July.
This date is significant for fans of the series, as the game’s complex time-travel story begins on this very day, the 28th of July, in the real-world location of Akihabara.
STEINS;GATE, which first launched in 2009, is a celebrated visual novel that became a global phenomenon after its 2011 anime adaptation, known for its intricate plot based on scientific concepts of time travel.
The new exhibition is being held at the iconic Don Quijote Akihabara store, a landmark within the very district that serves as the game’s primary setting.
The event features a variety of immersive displays and attractions for fans.
A centerpiece of the exhibition is a “real-size” replica of the Future Gadget 204, 2nd Edition Ver. 2.31.
The pop-up also includes an exhibition of replica key art from the series’ history.
To further immerse visitors in the experience, special in-store announcements are being played, voiced by Asami Imai, the actress who plays the lead heroine, Kurisu Makise.
The Don Quijote store itself has been decorated with event-themed wrappings on its exterior pillars and interior escalators.
The event also includes a shop selling exclusive new merchandise.
The goods feature new, original illustrations of the characters created for the exhibition by three prominent artists: lack, shirabii, and swav, who are all well-known for their work on other popular games and anime series.
Customers who spend over 3,000 yen on merchandise at the event will receive one of three exclusive postcards at random (pictured bottom of merchandise images).
The exhibition is scheduled to run from today until Sunday, the 31st of August, 2025.
