Iconic PSP handheld to be turned into collectibles by Good Smile Company
Good Smile Company has announced a new line of accessories designed to look like the classic PlayStation Portable handheld console.
This new merchandise is being released as part of the ongoing celebration of the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation brand, which first launched in 1994.
The PlayStation Portable, or PSP, was Sony’s first major entry into the handheld gaming market, released in 2004.
The device is fondly remembered by many for its sleek design, its wide screen, and its powerful multimedia capabilities, which set a new standard for portable entertainment.
This new line of products recreates the iconic handheld in the form of “shaka-shaka acrylics.”
“Shaka-shaka” is a popular style of acrylic accessory in Japan that features a hollow, multi-layered design containing small, loose pieces inside that make a rattling or shaking sound when moved.
The design of these new items faithfully reproduces the look of the original PSP-1000 model.
The “screen” portion of the acrylic is filled with small, movable charms shaped like the iconic PlayStation controller face buttons: the circle, cross, square, and triangle.
The product will be available in two classic color schemes, black and white and it is being offered in two different formats for fans to collect.
One is a larger acrylic stand, designed to be displayed on a desk or shelf, which is priced at 1,760 yen.
The second is a smaller, more portable acrylic keychain, which is priced at 1,320 yen.
This new merchandise allows fans to collect and display a nostalgic tribute to a celebrated piece of gaming hardware.
The reveal of these new collectibles follows the release of an equally nostalgic set of capsule toys released by Bandai, which take the shape of PlayStation controllers and play start-up sounds when pressed.
Pre-orders for the “PSP (PlayStation Portable) Shaka-Shaka Acrylic” stand and keychain are scheduled to begin next week, on Tuesday, the 22nd of July, 2025.
