Fukuro Festival

Fukuro Festival

The Fukuro Festival is one of the largest and most dynamic annual events held in the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo.

This massive festival is uniquely split into two separate parts, held over two different weekends in autumn.

The first part of the festival is the Mikoshi Festival, which is a powerful display of traditional culture.

Fukuro Festival 8

Dozens of mikoshi, or portable shrines, from local neighborhoods are paraded through the streets around Ikebukuro Station.

Fukuro Festival 6

The atmosphere is filled with the energetic chants of the mikoshi bearers and the sounds of traditional festival music.

Fukuro Festival 2

The second part of the festival, held two weeks later, is a celebration of dance.

This weekend features a variety of dance performances, culminating in the Tokyo Yosakoi contest.

Fukuro Festival 4

Hundreds of colorfully costumed Yosakoi dance teams from all over Japan gather to perform their high-energy, choreographed routines.

Fukuro Festival 7

The festival is a fantastic showcase of both traditional and modern Japanese culture, drawing huge crowds to the Ikebukuro area.
