Gong Cha rings in the New Year with new mochi based drinks
Gong Cha is wishing their Japanese customers a “Happy Slippery Year!” as the New Year approaches.
This unusual greeting is due to the release of their new Warabimochi Brown Sugar Matcha Milk Tea, a new dessert tea that features “drinkable” warabimochi.
Warabimochi is a unique type of mochi with a “slippery texture” made from bracken or potato starch rather than rice, which is usually coated with kinako (roasted soy flour).
Gong Cha’s new tea uses high-quality domestic matcha from Shizuoka Prefecture to make a flavorful matcha milk tea.
The tea is then combined with brown sugar, milk foam and warabimochi before serving.
It also features a colorful rice cracker topping, which is intended to be reminiscent of the New Year’s “mochi flowers”.
The Warabimochi Brown Sugar Matcha Milk Tea will be able as a Medium sized Iced Tea or a Small sized Hot Tea, with both costing 650 yen.
Gong Cha is also offering warabimochi as an addition to any of their other drinks for 90 yen. They recommend trying it with their Houjicha Milk Tea or adding it to Chocolate Milk.
Customers will be able to order the new Warabimochi Brown Sugar Matcha Milk Tea from Gong Cha stores across Japan from 26th December 2024.
Gong Cha stores will also be celebrating the New Year by changing their background music to a playlist of hit songs from 2024 recommended by staff members, posting New Year’s greetings on store signage and distributing fortune-telling slips via the official Gong Cha Japan X account.
