Evangelion’s Official Transformers Collab Returns with New EVA-02 x Rodimus Prime Crossover Figure
Takara Tomy is expanding its Transformers x Evangelion crossover with a new figure that imagines Rodimus Prime scanning Evangelion Unit-02 and adopting the iconic red Eva’s appearance.
The new “SYNERGENEX Evangelion Prime Unit-02” will headline a large wave of upcoming T-SPARK Transformers releases opening for pre-orders in Japan on September 9, 2026.
The announcement comes only days after Takara Tomy’s first modern Transformers x Evangelion release reached fans, with “Evangelion Prime Unit-01” beginning to ship in Japan at the end of August following pre-orders earlier this year.
That figure combined Optimus Prime with Evangelion Unit-01, transforming between robot and truck modes while incorporating the Eva’s purple, green, and black coloring alongside NERV and Autobot markings.
Its crossover went considerably further than a simple recolor, adding Unit-01-inspired armor, a Core Matrix inside the chest, and hybrid weapons including Progressive Energy Knives and the Cassius Axe, which combines elements of Evangelion’s Spear of Cassius with Optimus Prime’s Energy Axe.
The project itself marked the return of Transformers and Evangelion to an official crossover after around a decade apart, with Takara Tomy using Evangelion’s 30th anniversary to revive the partnership through its SYNERGENEX line.
Rather than simply creating a Unit-02 counterpart for Optimus, Takara Tomy has switched Transformers for the follow-up and built the new release around Rodimus Prime.
Its body adopts Evangelion Unit-02’s dominant red and orange coloring, while the redesigned head has clear Hot Rod and Rodimus influences that help distinguish it from the Unit-01 release.
The changes extend into newly styled chest and wing sections alongside a large double-ended weapon, giving the second figure noticeably different details despite sharing its basic engineering with the earlier crossover.
Takara Tomy first displayed the color prototype at Tokyo Toy Show 2026 in late August, with the finished release currently planned for March 2027.
Evangelion isn’t the only major part of the September 9 pre-order wave, with Takara Tomy also preparing new releases across New Legends, Dramatic Capture Series, and Age of the Primes.
New Legends will add the “NL-08 Delta Magnus Primal Vanguard Set,” combining a Delta Magnus based on the Studio Series 86 Commander Class Ultra Magnus with Agent Arcee and Powerdrive, the latter using a red version of the Power of the Primes Beachcomber mold.
The three-character set is currently scheduled for release in late February 2027, although Takara Tomy has yet to confirm its final Japanese price.
Dramatic Capture Series will meanwhile reach its eighth release with “Dinobot Island Part 1,” pairing Dinobot leader Grimlock with Ratchet in premium-finish versions based on their Studio Series 86 figures.
The set also adds effect parts and a sword for Grimlock, with its Japanese release currently scheduled for late February 2027 at ¥17,050 (approx. $109 USD / £81 GBP).
Takara Tomy has already shown a companion “Dinobot Island Part 2” set containing Slug and Sludge, although that release is currently planned separately for March 2027.
Transformers: Armada fans are also getting several substantial Age of the Primes releases, including “AOTP-46 Jetfire (Armada Universe)” and “AOTP-47 Optimus Prime (Armada Universe)”.
Jetfire will be compatible with the Commander Class Armada Universe Optimus Prime and comes with Astro Scope, Sky Blast, and Payload Mini-Cons, allowing the two larger Transformers to be combined in a recreation of their partnership from Armada.
Optimus Prime itself is a returning version of the well-received Legacy Evolution Armada Universe release, reissued under the Age of the Primes branding alongside Jetfire, with both currently expected to be priced at ¥17,600 each (approx. $113 USD / £84 GBP) ahead of shipping in late February 2027.
A separate Age of the Primes three-pack featuring Autobot Mirage, Ironhide, and Bluestreak will also join the wave as a Japanese T-SPARK ZONE distribution exclusive, including availability through the official Takara Tomy Mall.
Pre-orders for Takara Tomy’s newly announced Transformers releases will begin on September 9 through reputable hobby goods retailers such as HobbyLink Japan.
