Evangelion’s Awakened Unit-13 Model Kit Officially Returns 12 Years After Original Debut

The “EVANGELION 13 Awake Ver.” model kit recreates the Eva’s dramatic transformation from the movie, complete with its enormous halo, additional arms and two spears.

Neon Genesis Evangelion first aired in 1995 and follows Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy recruited by the mysterious organization NERV to pilot a giant biomechanical weapon against powerful beings known as Angels.

The Rebuild of Evangelion film series revisits the original story with updated animation, redesigned Evangelion units and a significantly different narrative that develops across four theatrical releases.

Evangelion Unit-13 first appeared in 2012’s Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, piloted by Shinji Ikari and Kaworu Nagisa using a unique dual-entry system that allows them to control the same machine.

During the movie’s final act, Unit-13 absorbs the Twelfth Angel and undergoes a dangerous awakening, developing an additional pair of arms and enormous halos as it triggers the catastrophic Fourth Impact.

Kotobukiya originally released this particular model kit in May 2015, with several subsequent reissues, most recently in December 2024, and the returning version retains the detailed sculpt and articulation system developed for the original design.

The completed model stands approximately 19 cm tall and uses a combination of CAD-designed joints and interchangeable components to recreate the Eva’s appearance in different configurations.

One of its main attractions is the ability to display Unit-13 in its distinctive four-armed form, with additional arm components included to reproduce the machine’s transformation during the movie.

The head also incorporates an articulated mouth that can open and close without replacing parts, alongside a linked throat mechanism that allows the Eva to tilt its head upwards.

Separate pre-painted eye parts are provided for Unit-13’s normal and awakened appearances, allowing builders to switch between the two designs.

The kit includes two spears, with a special connector that allows their shafts to be combined into a single weapon configuration.

A large halo is supplied with its own support components, alongside a flying display base that allows the assembled model to be positioned above the ground.

Additional replacement parts for the rear section provide compatibility with the included base, allowing collectors to recreate airborne poses inspired by the movie.

Unit-13 has also received several other model kit announcements during 2026, including Good Smile Company’s new MODEROID release, which features interchangeable components for its four-armed configuration and is scheduled for release in January 2027.

Earlier this year, Kaiyodo also unveiled an elaborate ARTPLA model titled “The Last Executor”, depicting Unit-13 standing over the defeated Evangelion Unit-02 Alpha in a scene inspired by the theatrical films.

Kotobukiya has also confirmed the return of its Evangelion New Unit-02 Alpha model kit, which recreates Asuka Shikinami Langley’s heavily modified Eva from Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
