Daradara Festival

Daradara Festival

The Daradara Festival is one of Tokyo’s most historic and longest-running Shinto festivals.

Its unique name, Daradara Matsuri, roughly translates to the “endless festival,” a reference to its unusually long 11-day duration.

Daradara Festival 3

This traditional event is the grand annual festival of the Shiba Daijingu Shrine in Minato Ward.

A famous and distinct feature of the festival is the sale of fresh ginger, known as shōga, on the shrine grounds.

Daradara Festival 2

For this reason, the event is also affectionately nicknamed the “Ginger Festival,” and the ginger is bought as a traditional charm to ward off evil.

While the festival period is long, the main festivities are concentrated on the weekend.

During this time, visitors can experience lively mikoshi processions, traditional kagura dance performances, and a bustling atmosphere.
