Concern in manga industry rises as Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun goes on indefinite hiatus due to author’s health

The popular manga series Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun will be going on an indefinite hiatus starting next month, according to an announcement in the November issue of Square Enix’s G Fantasy magazine.

The break is due to the series’ author needing to undergo medical treatment for an unspecified illness, and it will officially begin with the magazine’s next issue on November 18.

The hiatus was announced in the most recent issue of Monthly G Fantasy

This new break comes shortly after a previous one-month hiatus, from which the series had just returned in August.

The issue of manga creators needing to take breaks due to health issues has become a prominent topic amongst fans in recent times, with other popular series such as Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End also currently on hiatus due to issues surrounding the health of the author.

During Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun’s new, indefinite hiatus, G Fantasy magazine will re-publish previous chapters of the manga.

A final return date has not yet been decided and will be announced by the magazine as soon as it is confirmed.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is a long-running and popular supernatural comedy manga by Iro Aida that has been serialized in G Fantasy since 2014.

The story follows Nene Yashiro, an occult-loving high school girl who attempts to summon her school’s most famous “Seven Mysteries,” Hanako-san of the toilet, only to discover that the famous spirit is actually a boy.

The series has gained a massive global following, largely thanks to its successful anime adaptation, which is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

The first season premiered in 2020, and a new, two-part second season began airing in January 2025, with its second half premiering in July.

A separate anime adaptation of the spin-off manga, After-School Hanako-kun, also aired in 2023.

The manga is published in English by Yen Press and in Japan, the 25th compiled volume of the manga is scheduled to be released on October 27.
