Classic Touhou Shooter Scarlet Devil Returns with Worldwide Remake Release in 2026
A newly announced remake of a landmark Touhou Project title has been revealed for Nintendo platforms during the Japanese broadcast of the June 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation.
The game, titled Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, is being developed through a collaboration between Shanghai Alice and Alliance Arts.
Following its appearance during the presentation, Alliance Arts confirmed that the title will also launch outside Japan on additional platforms, expanding its availability beyond Nintendo hardware.
In addition to releases on the Nintendo Switch family of systems, the remake is also planned for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam.
The international version will support 11 different languages, including both Japanese and English.
This project revisits The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the sixth mainline installment in the Touhou series, which originally debuted for PC in 2002.
The game holds a significant place in the franchise’s history as the first Touhou title created by series creator ZUN specifically for Windows-based computers.
As in the original release, players will be able to select either Reimu Hakurei or Marisa Kirisame as their playable character while progressing through the series’ signature shoot-’em-up gameplay.
The remake introduces a music selection feature that allows players to switch between the original soundtrack arrangements and newly arranged versions.
Both the classic and rearranged musical tracks have been composed by ZUN, preserving the creator’s direct involvement in one of the series’ most celebrated elements.
Another notable addition is the inclusion of the original version of Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, allowing players to experience the historic release alongside the remake.
Nintendo has also made the announcement trailer available separately through its official Japanese YouTube channel for fans who wish to view the reveal outside of the Direct presentation.
The Touhou franchise continues to remain active, with its mainline entries widely available through Steam, including the twentieth core installment, Fossilized Wonders, which launched in 2025.
Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil will be released digitally for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam on September 10, 2026, although pricing has not yet been announced.
