Black Thunder goes bananas with new flavor

You can soon enjoy a new banana flavor bite-size version of one of Japan’s most popular chocolate bars.
Yuraku Confectionery have announced the upcoming release of “Banana Thunder Bite Size” which will become available in April.
Black Thunder is one of Japan’s best selling chocolate bars and is known for its unique combination of textures and flavors.

A normal bar of Black Thunder consists of a cocoa-flavored cookie bar mixed with Japanese-style rice puffs that have been coated in a layer of milk chocolate.
The new “Banana Thunder Bite Size” adds banana to the mix, to produce a version of Black Thunder inspired by the popular flavor combination of banana and chocolate.
A full-sized “Banana Thunder” bar was previously released as a limited-time offering in May 2023, where it gained popularity for its classic flavor combination and the crunchy texture of the banana chips that featured throughout the bar.

Its popularity has resulted in Yuraku Confectionery revisiting the concept when developing a new addition to the bite-sized “Wakuwaku Hitotsubu” sub-brand of Black Thunder, which is focused on single-serving portions.
The launch of “Banana Thunder Bite Size” is also strategically timed to coincide with the beginning of the new school year in Japan.
Yuraku Confectionery aims to tap into the spirit of excitement and motivation surrounding the new school year with the introduction of “Banana Thunder Bite Size,” a product designed to offer a fun and energizing treat.
This new version of Black Thunder combines banana flavor chocolate, crunchy banana chips and crispy pieces of biscuit.

The banana chips are produced by slicing bananas into long, thin pieces, which are then fried in coconut oil to achieve a satisfying crispness.
This process is intended to preserve the natural flavor of the bananas while providing a unique texture that releases a more intense banana taste as it breaks apart.
Each piece also features a half-coating of bitter chocolate, a flavor profile known to complement the sweetness of banana.

Set to go on sale from Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, a single pack of “Banana Thunder Bite Size” has a suggested retail price of 138 yen (approx. $0.92 USD / £0.70 GBP), but actual sale prices may vary between sales locations in Japan.
