What is the Tokyo Metropolitan District Pass (Tokunai Pass)?
The Tokyo Metropolitan District Pass (Tokunai Pass) offers unlimited rides on all JR East trains within Tokyo’s 23 wards.
This includes rapid and local trains on major routes such as the Yamanote Line, Chuo-Sobu Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line.
How much does it cost?
- 1-day pass:
- Adult: 760 yen
- Child: 380 yen
Child passes are only available for those between 6 and 11 years old.
Where can it be used?
- Unlimited use of JR East trains within Tokyo’s 23 wards.
Important information
- Valid for 1 calendar day (midnight to midnight).
- The age of a child is defined as the age on the date of purchase. A passport or other such document may be required to prove a child’s age.
- The pass cannot be used on any Shinkansen train.
Where to buy
The pass can be purchased at any of the JR EAST reserved seat ticket vending machines located at a JR East station within Tokyo’s 23 wards.
How to use
Insert only your rail pass into the automatic ticket gate.
Make sure to pick up your rail pass after passing through the gate. The rail pass cannot be reissued even if it is lost or stolen etc.
Value
The pass offers great value for those making multiple trips by train in Tokyo on a single day.
Travel between stations in central Tokyo on the Yamanote Line can typically cost between 100 yen and 300 yen, depending on the distance between the stations, so the pass may save you money if you travel 3 ormore times within central Tokyo.
If you head further away from central Tokyo to some of the more distant wards, you will likely find that the pass starts to offer savings after 1 or 2 journeys.
