Yushima Tenjin Ume Matsuri 2026
Last Updated on March 5, 2026

The Yushima Tenman-gū shrine is preparing to host the Yushima Tenjin Ume Matsuri, a seasonal plum blossom festival situated in the heart of Tokyo.
Located a short distance from Ueno Park, this historic site is dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, a tenth-century scholar and poet who became known as Tenjin, the deity of scholarship and the sky.
The grounds are expected to be filled with blooming plum trees, a favorite of Michizane, which draw many students and their families seeking success in upcoming academic examinations.
Visitors to the sanctuary will also notice numerous cattle statues, which serve as a reminder of the deep symbolic connection between the animal and the legendary scholar.
The upcoming festivities will feature a wide range of cultural performances, including traditional taiko drumming, outdoor tea ceremonies, and various styles of dance such as Japanese dance and flamenco.
Religious ceremonies specifically connected to the plum festival will be held alongside these public displays, many of which are scheduled to take place during the weekends.
A festive atmosphere will be enhanced by the presence of numerous street food stalls offering local snacks to those exploring the shrine grounds.
Travelers and residents near the Ueno area are encouraged to visit the shrine to experience the blossoms and participate in the vibrant local traditions.
