Yamaga Winter Lantern Festival 2026
Last Updated on March 5, 2026

The Kumamoto town of Yamaga is preparing to transform its historic district into a glowing landscape for the upcoming Yamaga Winter Lantern Festival.
While the community is widely recognized for its large scale summer Obon celebrations, this winter event focuses on a more serene atmosphere created by traditional craftsmanship.
Several blocks along the town’s storied trading road will be decorated with numerous illuminated paper umbrellas and intricately carved bamboo lanterns.
A central feature of the festivities will be the beautifully restored Yachiyoza theater, which typically serves as a prestigious venue for classical kabuki plays.
During the festival period, the theater will open its doors to host special performances of the town’s famous traditional summer dance for visiting crowds.
The celebration is scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the month of February and into early March.
Organizers note that the outdoor displays are typically set up around sunset to provide the maximum visual impact for evening strolls.
Visitors should be aware that the light displays are subject to weather conditions and may be cancelled in the event of rain or heavy snow.
This seasonal event offers a rare opportunity to see the architectural heritage of Yamaga highlighted by the soft glow of hundreds of handmade lanterns.
