Two American nationals have been arrested following a highly reckless and disruptive stunt inside a monkey enclosure at the Ichikawa City Botanical Garden in Chiba Prefecture.

The dangerous trespassing incident specifically targeted a popular baby Japanese macaque named “Punch,” who recently captured the hearts of visitors for adorably hugging and carrying around plush toys.

On Sunday morning, at approximately 10:50 AM, zoo attendees and staff were shocked when a man dressed in a full mascot costume illegally scaled the safety fences of the “monkey mountain” exhibit.

While the costumed individual trespassed into the restricted animal habitat carrying a teddy bear, a second individual remained on the outside to record the illicit act.

The sudden appearance of the bizarrely dressed intruder severely panicked the resident monkeys, causing the terrified animals to flee and huddle together in fear at the very top of the artificial mountain.

Quick-thinking zookeepers rushed to the scene, immediately removing the costumed trespasser from the enclosure before any physical harm could come to the animals or the intruders.

Both the trespasser and his accomplice were detained by zoo staff inside a management building until local authorities arrived to handle the situation.

Police quickly took the two suspects, who identified themselves as American citizens in their twenties, into custody.

Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the pair on suspicion of forcible obstruction of business.

Takashi Yasunaga, the director of the city’s zoo and botanical garden division, expressed profound disbelief at the unprecedented situation and firmly requested that the police take strict action against the perpetrators.

Yasunaga emphasized that the safety and well-being of the animals remain the absolute highest priority for the facility.

Following the disturbing breach, the zoo was forced to immediately cordon off portions of the monkey mountain viewing area from the general public.

While the park is routinely closed on Mondays, administration officials are now holding urgent meetings to discuss implementing enhanced security measures before potentially reopening on Tuesday.

It was later revealed that this appalling stunt was orchestrated purely as a promotional gimmick for a cryptocurrency meme coin.

The social media account associated with the digital currency, operating under the handle “thememecoincult” on X, released a statement regarding the trespassing incident.

Despite the obvious distress caused to the enclosed animals, the group attempted to frame the dangerous stunt as a demonstration of their community’s “wild energy” while trying to offer a monetary donation to smooth over the criminal act.

The X account published the following full statement regarding the arrests:

“We’re aware of the stunt that took place early this morning, when one of our community members entered the Punch enclosure at Ichikawa Zoo in Tokyo dressed in our mascot costume and carrying a teddy bear version of himself.

First and foremost, we are endlessly grateful for the cult we have built together and for a community that continues pushing boundaries and creating standalone virality out of thin air.

You’re built different.

That said, with our Season 1 Create to Earn campaign going live tonight, we want to remind everyone to respect local laws and never put yourselves, others, or any animals at risk.

Wild energy is part of the culture, but safety always comes first.

We have reviewed the footage from several angles, and we are happy to confirm that no monkey was touched or harmed during the stunt. From what we can tell, the sole intention was to give Punch a fresh new teddy bear to keep him company.

To the team at Ichikawa Zoo: please check your DMs. We would like to donate ¥1,000,000 toward improving the monkey enclosure and supporting the incredible work you do caring for these animals.

We hope you’re as hyped for Season 1 as we are.

This brazen attempt to manufacture online virality at the direct expense of living animals has sparked widespread outrage across social media platforms.

Authorities are continuing their criminal investigation into the two Americans as the zoo works diligently to ensure the safety and comfort of Punch and the rest of the macaque troop.
