Tokyo Death Race Manga Publishes Final Chapter

The futuristic and brutal racing series “Tokyo Death Race,” by veteran manga creator Naoki Serizawa, has officially published its final chapter on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app.
The manga, which first debuted its high-stakes, weapon-fueled action in December 2024, concludes its run after a fast-paced existence that quickly drew a dedicated readership.

Set in the near future, the story plunges readers into the year 205X where the Shuto Expressway is transformed into a deadly public road race where weapons are permitted.
The narrative follows former genius racer Soma Hayate, who is abducted by a sinister group and forced to participate in the metropolitan-wide competition to settle his outstanding debts.

Kodansha published the manga’s second compiled book volume on August 7.
Serizawa is well-known in the manga industry for creating a variety of successful works across different genres.

His celebrated action-comedy series “Saru Lock” ran from 2003 to 2009 in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine, ultimately compiling 22 volumes.
That series, about the genius locksmith Yataro Sarumaru, was popular enough to inspire both a live-action film and a live-action television adaptation in 2009.

Serizawa later revisited the property with the “Saru Lock Reboot” manga, which began in October 2018.
Beyond his action titles, Serizawa’s portfolio includes his work with Akitsugi Mizumoto on the ongoing “Seiheki Club” (Propensity Club) manga, which has been serialized on Impress’ CoMax online manga site since 2021.

He is also recognized for his contributions to the horror genre with “Biohazard: Marhawa Desire,” which Viz Media released in North America as “Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire.”

This five-volume manga series served as a prequel to the “Resident Evil 6” video game, detailing a viral outbreak investigation at the elite Marhawa Academy in Asia and introducing the character Piers Nivans as Chris Redfield’s partner in the BSAA.
Serizawa also showcased his design talents as the monster designer for Yoshitaka Amano’s recent “Gibiate” anime project.
The end of “Tokyo Death Race” marks another key milestone in the prolific career of the popular creator.
