The Original 1980s Gundam Model Kit Gets an Exclusive Modern Re-Release
Bandai Spirits has announced an exclusive modern re-release of the first-ever Gunpla kit created for Mobile Suit Gundam.
The “Gundam Base Limited Best Mecha Collection 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam (REVIVAL Ver.) [Gundam Base Color]” is a modern re-make of the very first kit released over four decades ago.
The original 1/144 scale RX-78-2 model debuted in 1980 and helped launch a massive global hobby phenomenon.
This modern revival carefully preserves the retro proportions and joint articulation of the original vintage toy.
While the outward appearance remains authentic to the 1980s aesthetic, the internal engineering features significant modern upgrades.
Bandai has incorporated over 40 years of plastic manufacturing advancements into the design, including color-injected runners and snap-fit construction that requires no glue.
The parts also utilize touch-gate technology, allowing builders to easily snap the pieces off the runners without needing specialized hobby nippers.
This modern re-release updates the classic mobile suit with a refreshing blue color scheme to represent the official Gundam Base flagship stores.
The Gundam Base operates as the official retail outlet for Gunpla, frequently hosting exclusive releases and interactive exhibits.
Fans visiting the stores can explore vast displays of assembled kits and purchase specialized tools to enhance their building experience.
Builders of this new kit will also receive an exclusive sheet of marking seals featuring the official store logo to decorate the completed robot.
The package includes several classic weapon accessories, such as the standard beam rifle and the recognizable defensive shield.
Two different lengths of beam sabers are provided, alongside specific pieces to display the hilts mounted directly onto the robot’s backpack.
This “Gundam Base Limited Best Mecha Collection 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam (REVIVAL Ver.) [Gundam Base Color]” model is priced at 1,430 yen (approx. $9 USD / £7 GBP).
Sales will officially begin exclusively at Gundam Base store locations across Japan on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
