The Setagaya Hachimangū Fall Festival is a vibrant and historic annual festival in West Tokyo.

This traditional Shinto celebration is famous for its unique and exciting main event.

Its most prominent feature is a ritual sumo tournament, known as hōnōsumo, held as an offering to the gods.

The tournament takes place on a dedicated sumo ring, or dohyō, located within the shrine grounds.

In addition to the sumo, the festival includes many classic elements of a Japanese matsuri.

Processions of mikoshi, or portable shrines, are paraded around the neighborhood on both days.

On Monday, the mikoshi make their ceremonial return and enter the shrine from midday.

The shrine grounds and surrounding streets are filled with numerous yatai food stalls offering a variety of festival snacks.

Traditional music and sacred kagura dance performances are also held on a stage at the shrine.
