“Pickle Pizza” returns to Domino’s Japan after 2 year hiatus

Domino’s Pizza Japan is reintroducing a pizza topped with over half a kilogram of pickles, after a nearly two year absence from their menu.

The unusual “Pickle Pizza” generated considerable attention and interest due to its unconventional combination of pizza and a significant quantity of pickles when it was first revealed in 2023.

Domino’s Japan have form for releasing unusual pizza creations, having released a “one handed” pizza earlier this year.

The “Pickle Pizza” concept was met with skepticism upon the product’s original 2023 release, with some consumers questioning its authenticity and comparing it to an April Fool’s Day prank.

However, subsequent consumer feedback gave it a positive reception, with many expressing surprise at the pizza’s flavor and expressing a preference for it over traditional pizza options.

The “Pickle Pizza” is a 40-centimeter diameter pizza base topped with cheese sauce and a generous 600 grams of pickles.

The pizza’s composition deliberately omits traditional tomato sauce, instead featuring a base of mozzarella cheese and Camembert cheese sauce.

This combination is intended to complement the crispy texture and refreshing acidity of the pickles, creating a flavor profile that emphasizes the pickles’ umami flavor.

The 2025 reintroduction of the “Pickle Pizza” is a direct response to consumer demand, particularly from individuals who identify as “pickle lovers”.

Domino’s Pizza has maintained the original recipe to ensure that consumers experience the same flavor profile as the 2023 release.

The company has also timed the reintroduction to coincide with the onset of spring, aiming to capitalize on seasonal preferences in Japan for refreshing and acidic flavors.

Domino’s Pickle Pizza will be available at all Domino’s Pizza stores in Japan from March 21st while supplies last.

It will be priced at 4,990 yen (approx. $33.27 USD / £25.66 GBP) for home delivery orders while takeout/collection orders get a 50% discount and will be charged 2,495 yen (approx. $16.63 USD / £12.85 GBP).

Although Dominos have announced plans to close over 170 stores in Japan, they still continue to dominate the pizza delivery market in the country and update their seasonal menus with new additions and returning favorites like the “Pickle Pizza”.
