A special edition virtual pet device commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Monster Hunter franchise is set to be re-released via a limited time lottery sale.

The “Digital Monster COLOR Monster Hunter 20th Edition” integrates the gameplay of Bandai’s modern color-screen Digimon device with the creatures of Capcom’s premier action-RPG series.

This collaboration brings together two Japanese gaming giants, allowing users to raise Monster Hunter beasts as if they were Digital Monsters.

While traditional virtual pets focus on raising a monster from an egg to battle, this device replaces the classic Agumon and Betamon with famous wyverns like Rathalos and Zinogre.

The device itself is based on the “Digital Monster COLOR” hardware, a contemporary remake of the 1997 original.

Unlike the monochrome button-battery devices of the past, this unit features a full-color LCD screen and a built-in rechargeable battery powered via USB-C.

The updated hardware allows for significantly more detailed pixel art, with monsters rendered in a dynamic style. It also includes quality-of-life features such as a “Cold Mode” to pause growth when the user is busy, and a backup system to save raised monsters.

The roster includes 36 different creatures, covering not just the standard versions but also Subspecies and “Deviant” variations.

Users can battle their raised monsters against friends using the device’s communication features, which are compatible with other Digital Monster COLOR and Digimon Pendulum COLOR units.

A major highlight of this release is the inclusion of exclusive collaboration monsters designed by veteran Digimon character designer Kenji Watanabe.

These special creatures are fusion designs that blend the flagship monsters of both franchises: “Rathalos Greymon” combines the “King of the Skies” Rathalos with the iconic dinosaur Digimon Greymon, while “Zinogre Garurumon” merges the Thunder Wolf Wyvern with the wolf-like Garurumon.

The hardware is available in two distinct shell designs that use UV printing technology to achieve a detailed, rugged look reflecting the scales and textures of the wyverns they represent:

  • Digital Monster COLOR Monster Hunter 20th Edition (Rathalos Color):

The device is priced at 7,700 yen (approx. $53.00 USD / £41.50 GBP), and it is currently being sold via a lottery system on Premium Bandai.
