Nintendo Dominates Japanese Holiday Sales for Hardware and Software

Famitsu has released its estimated physical game software and hardware sales data for the Japanese market, covering the key holiday shopping week from December 22, 2025, through December 28, 2025.

The report confirms that the Nintendo Switch 2 console and the racing game Mario Kart World maintained their leading positions in their respective sales charts.

The Nintendo Switch 2 continued to demonstrate powerful market momentum, selling 200,257 units during the week, contributing to a total lifetime sales figure of 3,784,067 units.

Nintendo’s overall platform sales remain formidable.

The other models in the Switch family sold a combined 32,775 units, including the Switch OLED Model with 14,004 units (9,397,922 lifetime), the Switch Lite with 11,776 units (6,804,465 lifetime), and the original Switch with 6,995 units (20,213,756 lifetime).

On the console side, the PlayStation 5 family sold a total of 19,232 units across all its variations.

This consisted of 13,587 units for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (1,117,528 lifetime), 3,995 units for the standard PlayStation 5 (5,859,425 lifetime), and 1,650 units for the PlayStation 5 Pro (311,257 lifetime).

The older PlayStation 4 moved only 15 units, bringing its lifetime total to 7,930,151.

Competition from Microsoft remained minimal, as the Xbox Series family sold a combined 297 units, split between the Xbox Series X Digital Edition (209 units, 24,711 lifetime), the Xbox Series S (71 units, 340,361 lifetime), and the Xbox Series X (17 units, 323,855 lifetime).

In software sales, “Mario Kart World” for the Switch 2, which originally launched on June 5, 2025, topped the chart with 94,645 physical copies sold, pushing its total lifetime sales to 2,668,381.

The rest of the top 10 was dominated by Nintendo platform titles.

“Pokemon Legends: Z-A” for the standard Nintendo Switch, released on October 16, 2025, secured second place with 59,469 units (1,529,823 lifetime).

Third place went to the Switch 2 title “Kirby Air Riders”, which sold 47,793 copies since its November 20, 2025, release, reaching 424,837 lifetime sales.

The fourth spot was occupied by the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”, also an October 16, 2025, release, which sold 46,868 copies and crossed a major milestone, exceeding one million lifetime sales with 1,004,154 units.

Konami’s “Momotaro Dentetsu 2: Anata no Machi mo Kitto Aru – Higashi Nihon Hen + Nishi Nihon Hen” secured the fifth and sixth positions with its two versions, both launched on November 13, 2025.

The standard Switch version sold 32,649 units (232,554 lifetime), and the Switch 2 Edition sold 30,154 units (188,535 lifetime).

Other titles in the top 10 included “Donkey Kong Bananza” for Switch 2 (15,258 units, 435,206 lifetime), the evergreen seller “Minecraft” for Switch (14,985 units, 4,109,192 lifetime), “Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV” for Switch 2 (14,808 units, 126,436 lifetime), and “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” for Switch (13,839 units, 8,311,118 lifetime).
