New Pokémon encyclopedia offers fans a scientific look at the series

Fans of the Pokémon franchise will soon have a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of their favorite creatures with the new “Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia”.
This book promises to explore the intricate behaviors, habitats, and relationships of wild Pokémon from a scientific perspective.

The Pokémon franchise originated in Japan in 1996 with the release of two interconnected Game Boy games, “Pokémon Red” and “Pokémon Green”.
It has since grown into a multi-billion dollar global phenomenon, encompassing video games, trading cards, anime series, movies, merchandise, and more.

The core concept revolves around collecting and training diverse creatures called Pokémon, each with unique abilities and characteristics, and battling them against other trainers.
The rich lore and imaginative world of Pokémon has captured the attention of audiences of all ages for nearly three decades.

The “Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia” aims to be the first full-scale academic exploration of Pokémon ecology.
Written by a doctor specializing in animal behavior and ecology, the book will analyze the descriptions found within the various “Pokédex” entries from the Pokémon games through a scientific lens.
This is inline with other recent approaches to the Pokémon franchise such as the “Pokémon Fossil Museum” that recreates Pokémon fossils and skeletons and will soon go on display in Chicago.

By focusing on key ecological concepts such as differences, similarities, rules, and connections between individual Pokémon and their environments, the encyclopedia seeks to unravel the biological plausibility and interconnectedness within the Pokémon world.
The book is structured into four comprehensive chapters:
Chapter 1: Pokémon Forms and Shapes

This section will examine the relationship between a Pokémon’s physical characteristics and its ecological niche.
It will explore variations such as differences between males and females, regional forms that adapt to specific habitats, and the science behind form changes and the evolutionary process within the Pokémon universe.
Chapter 2: Pokémon Life

This chapter will delve into the fundamental aspects of Pokémon survival, including their diverse strategies for finding food, mechanisms for regulating body temperature in various climates, their daily and seasonal rhythms influenced by day-night cycles, lunar phases, and seasonal changes, as well as their varied sleeping habits.
Chapter 3: Relationships between Pokémon

This section will explore the complex social interactions within the Pokémon world.
It will cover cooperative behaviors between species, strategies for deceiving predators or prey, territorial disputes and how Pokémon establish and defend their habitats, and the dynamics of Pokémon living in flocks or herds.
Notably, the chapter will also examine the often symbiotic coexistence between Pokémon and humans within the game’s lore.
Chapter 4: Mobility

One of the most visually striking aspects of Pokémon is their wide array of movement methods, from terrestrial locomotion to swimming and flight.
This chapter will observe and compare the diverse abilities of Pokémon, analyzing how their unique modes of transportation influence their ecology and the environments they inhabit.

The publisher, Shogakukan, states that this book offers a brand-new perspective on the mysterious creatures of the Pokémon world, encouraging readers to appreciate them not just as game characters but as viable living organisms within their fictional ecosystems.
The editors highlight the unique expertise of the author and the illustrator, both holding PhDs in animal behavior and ecology and sharing a deep passion for both Pokémon and real-world animals.

They believe this combination of academic rigor and genuine enthusiasm will make the “Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia” an engaging and insightful read for any Pokémon enthusiast.

The “Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia” will also feature illustrations by Kinoshita Chihiro.
It will be released on June 18th, 2025, priced at 1,430 yen (tax included) and promises to be a fascinating exploration into the science behind the fantastical world of Pokémon.
