Motoshinmei Shrine Annual Festival

The Motoshinmei Shrine Annual Festival is a traditional Shinto celebration held in the quiet neighborhood of Minami-Azabu in Tokyo.
This local festival, known as a Reitaisai, offers a wonderful opportunity to experience an authentic piece of Japanese community culture.

At the heart of the event is the energetic procession of the mikoshi, a portable shrine that is carried through the local streets by enthusiastic participants.

The sound of traditional festival music, or ohayashi, fills the air, creating a lively and historic atmosphere.
The streets surrounding the shrine come alive with yatai, which are festival stalls selling a variety of classic Japanese street foods.
Attendees can enjoy popular treats like yakisoba, takoyaki, and kakigori shaved ice.
This event is a cherished tradition for local residents and provides a charming glimpse into Tokyo’s neighborhood life.
