LEGO has announced a new set that allows builders to create a detailed replica of Nintendo’s iconic handheld console, the Game Boy.

The new “LEGO® Game Boy™” is being released as part of the “LEGO for Adults” line, which focuses on complex and display-worthy models for a mature audience.

The original Nintendo Game Boy, first released in 1989, was a revolutionary device that defined the handheld gaming market for a generation and had a massive cultural impact worldwide.

This new 421-piece LEGO set is a faithful, approximately 1:1 scale recreation of that classic piece of hardware, designed as a non-functional display piece with no lights or sound.

This release follows in the footsteps of other retro-themed Nintendo collaborations from LEGO, such as the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System set from 2020.

The model reproduces all of the handheld’s key details, from the D-pad and the A and B buttons to the small Start and Select buttons, as well as the contrast and volume dials on the side.

A key feature of the build is a functional cartridge slot in the back and the set comes with two brick-built replicas of classic game cartridges.

These are based on two of the most memorable titles from the Game Boy’s library: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land.

The “screen” of the LEGO Game Boy is a special lenticular piece that can be swapped out.

Builders can display the classic “Nintendo” logo start-up screen, or they can swap it for a screen that shows a mock-up of the gameplay from either of the two included game cartridges.

To facilitate its use as a piece of retro room decor, the set also includes a brick-built display stand for the Game Boy model.

A separate, smaller stand is also included to hold whichever of the two game cartridges is not currently slotted into the device.
