Japan’s Steak Lodge is celebrating “Meat Day” early on Monday, March 10th, by kicking off a three week promotion on new kangaroo steak dishes at its restaurants.

The Kangaroo Steak event runs from Monday, March 10th to Monday, March 31st, and will feature two specially crafted sauces for the kangaroo steak, building on the restaurant’s four-year history of serving this unique meat.

Meat Day is a promotional event held by many restaurants in Japan on the 29th of each month (with “2” (“ni”) “9” (“kyu”) sounding similar to “niku”, the Japanese for meat.

This month, Steak Lodge is extending the promotion from one day to a three week event to promote their kangaroo steaks.

The restaurant aims to provide a unique dining experience and introduce customers to the versatility of kangaroo meat.

Kangaroo meat has gained popularity due to its nutritional profile, being high in protein and iron while low in fat and calories.

The meat is described as having a lean, refreshing taste.

This makes it an appealing choice for health-conscious individuals and those focused on fitness.

Steak Lodge began serving kangaroo steak in February 2021, and has experienced a steady increase in demand.

The consumption of kangaroo meat is also being promoted as a means of addressing the overpopulation of kangaroos in Australia.

The excessive kangaroo population in some areas has led to ecological imbalances and competition with livestock for resources.

By increasing demand for kangaroo meat, it is hoped that these ecological and agricultural issues can be mitigated.

While the standard menu features kangaroo steak with options like rock salt, smoked rock salt, real wasabi, and the restaurant’s original raw onion-based sauce and garlic sauce, the “Meat Day” promotion introduces two new sauces:

  • Red Ginger Sauce: This sauce offers a subtle ginger flavor that complements the mild taste of kangaroo meat. The combination of the zesty sauce and the meat’s texture is intended to provide a satisfying steak experience.
  • White Creamy Sauce: This rich, creamy sauce features a hint of garlic aroma. It is designed to be approachable for those new to kangaroo meat or hesitant about trying game meats.

Prices will be determined based on the weight of the steak ordered:

  • 200g: 2,145 yen (approx. $14.58 USD / £11.29 GBP)
  • 300g: 2,970 yen (approx. $20.19 USD / £15.63 GBP)
  • 400g: 3,795 yen (approx. $25.80 USD / £19.97 GBP)

Rice and soup are included for free with orders of kangaroo steak placed between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Outside of these hours, rice and soup are charged separately.

Steak Lodge restaurants also charge a 10% late-night fee to all orders placed after 11:00 PM.

The Kangaroo Steak event will take place exclusively at their Shibuya Dogenzaka, Shibuya Udagawa, Ikebukuro, Ichikawa, and Akihabara stores.
