Hatsune Miku’s Iconic Senbonzakura Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary

One of Hatsune Miku’s most iconic songs has officially turned 15, with September 17, 2026 marking exactly 15 years since Kurousa-P first uploaded “Senbonzakura” to Niconico.

Originally released on September 17, 2011, the song became one of the defining Vocaloid tracks of the 2010s and helped introduce countless listeners to both Hatsune Miku and the wider online Vocaloid music scene.

Written and composed by Kurousa-P, also known as WhiteFlame, “Senbonzakura” combines fast-paced Japanese rock with a retro setting inspired by the rapid Westernization of Japan following the Meiji Restoration.

Its original music video helped establish that identity just as strongly as the song itself, dressing Miku and the other Piapro Characters in military and early 20th-century-inspired outfits against a world filled with cherry blossoms, traditional Japanese imagery and technology from different eras.

Illustrator Ittomaru created the artwork behind that distinctive world, while Mienohito produced the original video, with both later returning to work on a completely new version of the music video released in 2025.

That updated MV retained the characters and visual identity that fans immediately associate with “Senbonzakura” while reworking the presentation more than a decade after the original first appeared online.

The song’s longevity is especially clear on Niconico, where the original upload has now surpassed 18 million views and is regarded as the platform’s most-viewed original song, extending well beyond Vocaloid-specific records.

Its reach quickly spread far beyond the original video as fans produced an enormous number of covers, dance performances, instrumental arrangements and other derivative works, while the song itself became a regular inclusion in rhythm games and karaoke catalogs across Japan.

“Senbonzakura” also developed a life well beyond Vocaloid culture, with adaptations and projects based on its world eventually expanding into novels, manga, stage productions, musicals and even traditional kabuki.

Ittomaru began writing the “Senbonzakura” novel series in 2013, developing the characters and setting established through the song into a larger parallel-world story that would later inspire additional adaptations of its own.

The song has also been performed by numerous human artists over the years, with one of its highest-profile appearances coming in 2015 when veteran Japanese singer Sachiko Kobayashi performed “Senbonzakura” during NHK’s annual Kohaku Uta Gassen New Year’s Eve music show.

Another particularly well-known interpretation came from Wagakki Band, whose arrangement combined modern rock with traditional Japanese instruments and helped expose the song to an even wider international audience.

Its influence continues to appear in new Hatsune Miku releases 15 years later, including Good Smile Company’s 2026 re-release of the “Nendoroid Hatsune Miku: Senbonzakura Ver.,” which recreates Miku’s retro-modern outfit alongside the cherry blossom streamer and bicycle seen in the original video.

The song has also remained part of Miku’s live repertoire, appearing across concerts, games and crossover events long after many tracks from the same era disappeared from regular circulation.

Fifteen years after its original upload, “Senbonzakura” remains one of the clearest examples of how a single Vocaloid song can grow far beyond its original music video, developing into its own recognizable world while remaining closely associated with Hatsune Miku and the online culture that helped make her a global phenomenon.
