Heero Yuy’s Wing Gundam Zero was one of the most powerful and dangerous machines in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, combining devastating firepower with an advanced combat system capable of overwhelming even its own pilot.

The “RG 1/144 WING GUNDAM ZERO” brings this iconic mobile suit to Bandai’s detailed Real Grade Gunpla line, with elaborate wing mechanisms, an extendable Twin Buster Rifle, and the ability to transform into its high-speed Neo Bird Mode.

Gundam Wing VS KEYART

First appearing in the 1995 anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero originated from plans developed by the five scientists responsible for the Gundams deployed during Operation Meteor.

Its design was considered too dangerous to complete, largely because of the revolutionary ZERO System, which provided its pilot with predictions of possible battle outcomes while placing enormous strain on their mind.

The Gundam was eventually constructed by Quatre Raberba Winner using the original plans, but its overwhelming power and the effects of the ZERO System made it one of the most dangerous weapons in the series.

Wing Zero subsequently passed through the hands of several pilots before becoming closely associated with Heero Yuy, who eventually mastered the machine and used it during the final stages of the conflict between the Earth Sphere Unified Nation and White Fang.

Armed with the devastating Twin Buster Rifle, Wing Zero possessed enough firepower to destroy entire space colonies, while its transformation into Neo Bird Mode allowed it to travel at high speeds across vast distances.

Its rivalry with Gundam Epyon also became one of the defining conflicts of the anime, culminating in an unforgettable showdown between Heero and Zechs Merquise as the fate of Earth hung in the balance.

Bandai based its Real Grade kit on Wing Zero’s original television anime design, retaining the angular mechanical wings and colorful armor that distinguish it from the white, feather-winged version subsequently introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

The kit used an entirely new 1/144 scale design, combining intricate mechanical detailing and layered armor with advanced articulation mechanisms developed specifically for the Real Grade interpretation.

One of its biggest attractions is the pair of enormous Wing Binders mounted on the backpack, which incorporate five separate axes of movement that allow the wings to spread, fold, and rotate into a variety of positions.

Each binder also contains an interconnected thruster mechanism that simultaneously rotates its internal unit, extends the nozzle, and deploys the surrounding fins, giving builders a closer look at the engineering behind Wing Zero’s incredible mobility.

These moving components allow the wings to be arranged for both dramatic aerial displays and more compact ground-based poses, with additional verniers on the backpack providing further adjustment.

The kit also reproduces Wing Zero’s transformation into Neo Bird Mode, with its torso, limbs, shield, and wing assemblies repositioned to create the mobile suit’s streamlined flight configuration.

Bandai incorporated several mechanisms specifically for this transformation, including articulated sections around the knees and feet that allow the lower legs to fold into the compact arrangement seen in the anime.

The shield forms the nose of Neo Bird Mode and includes an extendable central section, while a linked mechanism allows its smaller wings to move as the nose block is adjusted.

Wing Zero’s signature Twin Buster Rifle is another highlight, consisting of two separate weapons that can be joined together to recreate the enormous combined cannon used for its most devastating attacks.

Bandai added an original sliding mechanism to the barrels, allowing them to extend outward for firing poses, while locking connections in the weapon handles help the model maintain a secure grip when supporting the combined rifle.

The shoulders, arms, and torso were also designed with an extensive range of motion, making it possible to position both hands around the weapon for Wing Zero’s famous full-power firing stance.

Additional details include shoulder armor that opens to reveal hidden verniers and storage compartments for the two Beam Sabers, alongside deployable Machine Cannons concealed beneath the upper chest armor.

The cockpit hatch and chest intake covers can also be opened, while the hip joints incorporate two independently movable swing axes that allow the legs to be positioned in lower and wider stances.

Articulated knee armor moves alongside the leg joints to accommodate deeper bends, with additional hand parts and a sheet of Realistic Decals providing further options for posing and detailing the finished model.

Builders looking to recreate the climactic showdown between Heero and Zechs should also consider the “RG 1/144 GUNDAM EPYON”, which brings Wing Zero’s greatest rival to the same Real Grade lineup, complete with its enormous Beam Sword, flexible Heat Rod, and transformation into a two-headed dragon-like Mobile Armor.

For fans who prefer the later Endless Waltz design, the “RG 1/144 WING GUNDAM ZERO EW” offers another interpretation of Heero’s mobile suit, replacing the original mechanical wings with the large, angel-like feathers that became synonymous with the Gundam’s appearance in the OVA.
