Gundam Creator Yoshiyuki Tomino Receives One of Japan’s Top National Honors

Legendary director Yoshiyuki Tomino, best known for creating the influential anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, has been awarded Japan’s “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon”.
This prestigious accolade was bestowed upon the veteran creator during the Spring 2026 conferment of decorations, which recognizes individuals who have made significant, distinguished achievements in their respective fields.

Tomino has spent over half a century working in the animation industry, directing numerous original works and leaving a profound impact on both domestic and international anime scenes.
He began his career at Mushi Production, working on early television animation before eventually directing groundbreaking mecha shows that redefined Japanese pop culture.

Beyond his work on the original 1979 robot classic, his extensive filmography includes highly acclaimed projects such as Space Runaway Ideon, Aura Battler Dunbine, and Turn A Gundam.
Following the announcement of his decoration, Tomino released a public statement expressing his unexpected happiness at receiving the honor.

While acknowledging that the award is strictly given to an individual, the director emphasized that his entire body of work was only made possible through the dedication of thousands of staff members.
He credited the animators, finishing artists, art directors, photographers, and sound technicians who collectively brought his behind-the-scenes planning, writing, and directing to life.

Tomino noted that his primary goal through the medium of television animation has always been to provide enjoyment to the next generation while conveying a message of constant innovation.
The veteran director concluded his statement by reflecting on the profound significance of television anime finally being recognized for such national honors, hoping that his achievement will serve as a strong encouragement to younger creators working in the industry today.
