Tokyo Banana will be introducing a new flavor, and a new super cute animal mascot, to their range of banana shaped cakes.

Tokyo Banana has been voted the number 1 “omiyage”, or souvenir, to gift when you return from a visit to Tokyo.

The classic Tokyo Banana is a banana shaped cake filled with banana flavor custard cream.

They have also produced special flavors which feature animals printed on the cake including Sea Otters (coffee), Bears (honey) and Cats (chocolate).

The banana shaped treat is so popular that it has even collaborated with pop culture icons like Pokémon and Chiikawa in the past.

Their latest product is yet another new animal and flavor combo, which sees a new caramel banana flavored cake represented by a racoon dog.

Tokyo Banana’s have created a new mascot, Ponchame, who is a raccoon dog with irresistibly large, expressive eyes and a dream as grand as their fluffy belly: to become the cutest raccoon in the world.

Ponchame’s debut will be staggered, offering Tokyo Banana fans two opportunities to snag the new caramel banana flavor cakes.

Starting Saturday, March 1st, 2025, an exclusive presale will commence at two locations within JR Tokyo Station: Tokyo Bananas in Tokyo Station Ichibangai, and the HANAGATAYA Gransta Tokyo Central Passage Store.

A week later, on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, Ponchame will make their grand entrance at select stores carrying Tokyo Banana World products, including the popular Tokyo Banana Studio 1F-STUDIO at Daimaru Tokyo Store, expanding the new cakes availability to a wider audience.

The new cakes will be available in 4, 8 and 12 piece boxes with the following prices:

  • 4 pieces – 734 yen (approx. $4.90 USD / £3.87 GBP)

  • 12 pieces – 1,998 yen (approx. $13.34 USD /£10.55 GBP)

Each of the new Ponchame cakes will feature a soft, golden-brown sponge cake infused with the rich flavor of caramel while inside, a creamy caramel banana custard awaits.

Ponchame’s quest for ultimate cuteness has inspired the designs printed on each cake.

They’re depicted diligently practicing poses in front of a mirror, adorned with a signature pink flower.

From the “Pompoko pose” (a reference to the raccoon dog’s characteristic drumming on its belly) to winks and surprised expressions, there are five distinct Ponchame designs.

One design also features a heart, marking it as the “luckiest” cake.

Recognizing the enduring popularity of the classic “Tokyo Banana,” the company has also introduced a special assortment that allows fans to enjoy both the original and the new Ponchame treat.
