Two new Final Fantasy themed whiskies released in Japan

Japan’s smallest whisky distillery is set to release two new whiskies inspired by Final Fantasy XIV.

The two whiskies will be labeled “Final Fantasy XIV Amahagan Edition Hydaelyn” and “Final Fantasy XIV Amahagan Edition Zodiark”.

They have been distilled by the Nagahama Distillery in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, which is recognized as Japan’s smallest whisky distillery.

The distillery is Japans smallest and also includes a craft beer brewery

Both whiskies will be available throughout Japan from May 13th 2025.

Prior to the general release, an exclusive pre-sale period will start from March 26th through the Mitsukoshi Isetan online platform “MOO:D MARK by ISETAN”, accessible via a dedicated website.

Deliveries from the pre-sale are anticipated to occur between late April and early May.

Final Fantasy XIV is a highly successful MMORPG and boasts a global player base of over 30 million accounts.

This collaboration between Nagahama Distillery and Square Enix highlights the increasing trend of cross-promotional activities between distilleries and other areas such as gaming and anime.

Other recent collaborations have involved sake and beer inspired by the Yakuza (Like A Dragon) game series and whisky based on the City Hunter anime/manga series.

Nagahama Distillery first began producing whisky in 2016

This partnership leverages the popularity of Final Fantasy XIV to introduce Nagahama Distillery’s whisky to a broader audience, while simultaneously offering Final Fantasy XIV fans a unique collectible item.

Nagahama Distillery, despite its small size, has gained recognition for its innovative whisky, contributing to the growing diversity of the Japanese whisky market.

Final Fantasy XIV Amahagan Edition Hydaelyn

This blended whisky is inspired by Hydaelyn, a character representing the will of light within the Final Fantasy XIV storyline.

The blend incorporates malt and grain whiskies, with maturation in Sauternes and white port casks contributing to a sweet and fresh flavor profile.

Final Fantasy XIV Amahagan Edition Zodiark

Volume: 700ml
Ingredients: Malt
Raw material origin: United Kingdom, Japan (malt whisky)
Alcohol content: 47%
Suggested retail price: 8,000 yen (approx. $53.35 USD / £41.15 GBP) + tax

This blended malt whisky is inspired by Zodiark, a character representing the will of darkness within the Final Fantasy XIV narrative.

The blend consists entirely of malt whiskies, matured in wine and sherry casks, resulting in a complex, rich, and deep flavor. A subtle peat smoke character contributes to a lingering finish.

The use of peated malt in the Zodiark edition also adds a complex note to the whisky.
