New Disney Shinkansen comes to Japan’s railways in 2025

A new Disney-themed bullet train, the “Wonderful Dreams” Disney Shinkansen, is scheduled to commence operations on Japan’s high-speed rail network.

Following on from the success of the Disney “Magical Journey” Shinkansen, which was launched in 2024, this collaborative project between JR Central and Tokyo Disney Resort is set to launch on February 21st 2025.

The “Wonderful Dreams” Disney Shinkansen is designed to commemorate the opening of Tokyo DisneySea’s “Fantasy Springs” area, which took place in June 2024.

Tokyo DisneySea’s “Fantasy Springs” area is based on popular films such as Frozen, Peter Pan and Rapunzel

As such, the train’s exterior and interior will feature decorations inspired by “Fantasy Springs”, including imagery from popular Disney films such as “Frozen” “Tangled” and “Peter Pan”.

Notably, this will be the first special wrapping applied to trains operating on the Tokaido Shinkansen line in its 60-year history.

Unlike the “Disney Magical Journey Shinkansen” which operates on the Tohoku and Hokkaido lines, the “Wonderful Dreams” train will run on the Tokaido Shinkansen line, connecting Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.

It will primarily operate on “Hikari” and “Kodama” services, making stops at major stations along the line, including Kyoto, Toyohashi, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Shin-Yokohama, and Shinagawa.

The “Wonderful Dreams” Disney Shinkansen utilizes the N700A series, with a total of 16 cars.

The exteriors of all cars will be adorned with scenes from Disneyland’s “Fantasy Springs” area as follows:

  • Cars No. 2, 5, 8, 11, and 15 will feature a purple “Rapunzel’s Forest” design.
  • Cars No. 3, 6, 9, and 13 will feature a green “Peter Pan’s Never Land” design.
  • Cars No. 4, 7, 10, 12, and 14 will feature a blue “Frozen Kingdom” design.
  • Cars No. 1 and 16 will feature a dark blue design that integrates all three themed areas.

Inside the train, passengers will find headrest covers decorated with beloved Disney characters, such as Anna and Elsa from “Frozen,” Peter Pan, and Rapunzel.

Table stickers will also feature “Fantasy Springs” themes, accompanied by a QR code that provides a link to the official Tokyo DisneySea website.

The onboard melody will also be Disney-themed, based on the song “I See the Light” from the film “Tangled”.

The new “Wonderful Dreams” Disney Shinkansen will run from the 21st of February 2025 until mid-September 2025. The service end date will be announced closer to the time.
