Bandai Launches New Japanese Art Inspired Wing Gundam Gunpla Kit

Wing Gundam is officially getting an eye-catching new Entry Grade release, with Bandai combining the iconic mobile suit with traditional Japanese ukiyo-e artwork for a special-edition Gunpla kit.

The “ENTRY GRADE 1/144 Wing Gundam [Ukiyo-e Package Ver.]” gives the existing model completely new packaging alongside a sheet of Japanese-inspired decorations that can be added directly to the completed kit.

Wing Gundam is the original mobile suit piloted by Heero Yuy in the 1995 anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, where it serves as one of the five Gundams sent to Earth as part of Operation Meteor.

Its combination of large wings, powerful Buster Rifle, and ability to transform into the aircraft-like Bird Mode helped make it one of the most recognizable Gundam designs of the 1990s, eventually leading Bandai to introduce its first Entry Grade model in 2025.

The new “Ukiyo-e Package Ver.” keeps that beginner-friendly 1/144 kit at its core, retaining its simplified construction, strong color separation, articulation, and transformation into Bird Mode.

Its Buster Rifle and Shield are also included, meaning the main changes come from the completely different presentation and optional markings created specifically for this release.

The package artwork places Wing Gundam beneath Mount Fuji alongside an eagle perched on a pine branch, combining the mobile suit with imagery inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series.

That theme continues onto the model itself through newly included eagle-themed stickers that can be applied to the inner sections of Wing Gundam’s wings, giving builders the option of carrying part of the ukiyo-e artwork beyond the box.

The “ENTRY GRADE 1/144 Wing Gundam [Ukiyo-e Package Ver.]” is priced at ¥1,760 (approx. $11 USD / £8 GBP).

Wing Gundam is not the only mobile suit receiving the treatment, as Bandai has created additional Ukiyo-e Package Ver. releases based on the RX-78-2 Gundam, Strike Gundam, and ν Gundam.

The “ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam [Ukiyo-e Package Ver.],” priced at ¥1,430 (approx. $9 USD / £7 GBP), brings the same concept to the original Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray in 1979’s Mobile Suit Gundam.

Its artwork draws from Hokusai’s Rainstorm Beneath the Summit, placing the RX-78-2 beneath a dark Mount Fuji surrounded by cherry blossoms, while the included decorations add matching Mount Fuji and blossom imagery to areas including the shoulder armor and shield.

The “ENTRY GRADE 1/144 Strike Gundam [Ukiyo-e Package Ver.],” also priced at ¥1,430 (approx. $9 USD / £7 GBP), gives Kira Yamato’s main early mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED an even more dramatic interpretation.

Its package is inspired by Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, surrounding Strike Gundam with huge waves and autumn maple trees, while wave patterns and stylized kanji can be added to the model’s shoulder armor and shield.

The ENTRY GRADE 1/144 ν Gundam [Ukiyo-e Package Ver.], priced at ¥1,760 (approx. $11 USD / £8 GBP), draws on traditional Japanese art to give the iconic mobile suit from Char’s Counterattack a very different identity from standard Gunpla releases.

The ν Gundam kit takes inspiration from Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, featuring a dark winter scene surrounding Mount Fuji on the packaging, which is also replicated on the shield.

All of the new Ukiyo-e Package Ver. kits were released in Japan on August 29, with the ν Gundam kit on sale exclusively at Gundam Base stores in Japan and the Gundam Side-F store in Fukuoka.

As general release kits, the RX-78-2 Gundam, Strike Gundam, and Wing Gundam Ukiyo-e Package Ver. kits are now available through hobby goods retailers including HobbyLink Japan.
