Japan exclusive Hatsune Miku potato chips arrive this April

Hatsune Miku is teaming up with Calbee, one of Japan’s most recognisable snack companies.

Calbee will be releasing special limited-edition packs of their Kataage Potato Chips, with 4 new packaging designs featuring Hatsune Miku set to be available.

This is the latest in a series of recent collaborations that have seen Hatsune Miku appear on packs of throat lozenges, protein powder and even underwear.

This collaboration brings together Hatsune Miku and Kataage Potato Chips, which both originally come from Hokkaido.

Hatsune Miku was created by Crypton Future Media, a company based in Hokkaido’s capital city, Sapporo.

Kataage Potato Chips were developed using a method similar to the traditional kettle-cooked potato chip technique, originating in the mid-19th century United States, and has been a long-selling brand in Japan.

Hatsune Miku will feature on Light Salt flavor packs of Kataage Potato Chips

The chips are characterized by their thick-cut slices and firm texture, providing a robust flavor.

Kataage Potato Chips were first released exclusively in Hokkaido on November 8th, 1993, before later becoming available nationwide in 2005.

The brand celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023.

Miku will also be included on packs of Black Pepper flavor Kataage Potato Chips

Popular flavors include “light salt”, “black pepper”, and “roasted seaweed”, as well as various limited-time offerings.

The Hatsune Miku collaboration packaging aims to attract both existing Kataage Potato Chip fans and new consumers.

Three creators have contributed original illustrations of Hatsune Miku, incorporating “Kataage Potato” branding elements into the character’s attire.

Each flavor will have two different Hatsune Miku designs to choose from

The collaboration packaging will only be available for two flavors: “light salt” and “black pepper” and each flavor will have two distinct designs available to choose from.

The Hatsune Miku packaging also incorporates an AR feature that allows users to view videos via their smartphones.

65g bags of Kataage Potato Light Salt and Black Pepper flavor will feature the new packaging and will be available from convenience stores across Japan from April 14th and priced at 190 yen (approx. $1.28 USD / £0.99 GBP).

The Hatsune Miku packs will be on sale from April 14th

Calbee are also offering Hatsune Miku fans the chance to win tickets to the Hatsune Miku JAPAN LIVE TOUR 2025 or bags of Kataage Potato Chips by sharing posts on social media.
