The Strongest Tableware – Baki anime meets traditional Japanese ceramics in new collab

A new collaboration will merge the “Baki” series, a prominent martial arts anime franchise, with traditional Japanese ceramics, to create a new collection of plates.

The plates will be made from Kutani ware, a distinguished Japanese colored ceramic originating from the southern region of Ishikawa Prefecture, which holds the designation of an intangible cultural property.

Kutani ware dates back to the 17th century

The collaboration leverages the defining characteristics of Kutani ware, including the thick layering of Japanese paint, its inherent transparency, and its vibrant color palette, to depict iconic scenes from the “Baki” series on small plates.

3 different Kutani ware plates will be available, each based on a different character from the Baki series.

This project aims to cater to enthusiasts of both the “Baki” series and Kutani ware, while simultaneously expanding their appeal to a broader audience. The project also aspires to create what is described as “the strongest tableware on earth.”

Ishikawa Prefecture is renowned for its rich tradition of craftsmanship, encompassing Kaga Yuzen, lacquerware, and Japanese umbrellas.

However, the region is currently facing significant challenges, including declining demand and a shortage of successors due to the aging of artisans, evolving lifestyles, and the influx of affordable foreign products.

DMM, the company responsible for the collaboration, operate a “Regional Revitalization” project, which works towards the mission of “creating sustainable businesses that contribute to regions of Japan”.

By integrating DMM’s expertise, cultivated through its involvement in over 60 businesses, including anime and games, with local specialties and industries, the company aims to generate new demand and cultivate local support, ultimately fostering sustainable business growth.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the three plates that will be available as part of the Baki ceramic plate collection:

Baki Hanma Ver.

This plate is split into two halfs, depicting the scene where Baki visualises a giant praying mantis in order to train for the eventual battle against his father, Yujiro Hanma.

Yujiro Hanma Ver.

This plate depicts Yujiro Hanma, known as the “strongest creature on earth”, combined with imagery such as a wave which adds classic Kutani ware elements to the piece.

Biscuit Oliva Ver.

The final plate shows Biscuit Oliva, known as “Mr. Unchained”, performing his move “Ball”. The plate is finished with pattern elements befitting of Kutani ware.

The collection will be made by Seikogama, a prominent manufacturer of Kutani ware.

Seikogama first produced Kutani ware in the early Taisho period, becoming the first to introduce screen printing technology into the Kutani ware industry. Their ongoing mission is to bring Kutani ware into everyday life at an affordable price.

Each plate measures 11cm in diameter and will be priced at 2,200 yen (tax inc.) and will be on sale via the DMM website from 13:00 on February 19th, 2025.
