Hida Ikibina Festival 2026

Last Updated on March 10, 2026

The Hida Ichinomiya area in Gifu Prefecture is preparing to host the Hida Ikibina Festival, a unique celebration that brings the tradition of Hinamatsuri to life through a procession of living dolls.

During this traditional event, nine unmarried women from across the Hida region are chosen to represent the Emperor, Empress, and members of the imperial court while dressed in authentic Heian period costumes.

The participants will march through the streets of the historic district near Hida-Ichinomiya Station, creating a striking visual display that mimics the arrangement of a traditional doll set.

Spectators can expect to see the procession make its way to the Minashi Shrine, a significant spiritual site where the participants offer prayers for a successful harvest and the well being of the local community.

This festival is particularly noted for its preservation of ancient courtly etiquette and the meticulous detail of the multi layered silk kimonos worn by the participants.

Local residents often gather along the route to witness the elegant parade, which is accompanied by traditional music and ceremonial rituals.

In addition to the main procession, the event typically includes various cultural activities and the distribution of rice cakes to visitors as a gesture of good fortune.

The celebration serves as a significant cultural highlight for the region, drawing interest from those looking to experience a more interactive version of the standard doll displays found elsewhere in Japan.
