Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy’s Japanese release to get exclusive promo cards

Wizards of the Coast has unveiled details on new cards and mechanics for its highly anticipated new set, “Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY,” slated for release in Japan on June 13th.
Japanese collectors have also had some exciting news, as it’s been confirmed that full booster box purchases via most retailers will come with a Japan-exclusive promotional card.

The “Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY” set will feature collaborative cards that bring the iconic world of the “FINAL FANTASY” role-playing game series to the Magic: The Gathering universe.
A collective of Magic artists has come together to depict memorable scenes from across the “FINAL FANTASY” saga in their own distinct styles.
Additionally, familiar artwork from the “FINAL FANTASY” series will also appear as nostalgic cards within the set.

To further celebrate this crossover, “Legendary” cards will be introduced, reimagining iconic Magic spells and creatures with artwork representative of the “FINAL FANTASY” franchise.
“FINAL FANTASY・Artist” borderless cards, showcasing the artwork of the talented artists who have supported the “FINAL FANTASY” series over the years, will also be available.
The set will also introduce several special new mechanics, including:
- Job Selection: Heroes can walk various paths, and their equipment can change their destiny. “Job Selection” is a new triggered ability found on some Equipment cards in this set.
- Saga Creatures: Summoned beasts from “FINAL FANTASY” make their debut as Magic’s first “Saga Creatures,” supporting players in their battles.
- Transforming Double-Faced Cards: Double-faced cards return, allowing players to cast the front face for its mana cost and transform it to the back face upon meeting specific conditions. These cards depict characters, mini-games, and story moments.
- Levels: Some spells will have effects that change across three different levels depending on the amount of mana paid, indicated by the new keyword “Levels.”
- Flashback: The “Flashback” mechanic returns, this time appearing in a cycle of “Towns.”
- Land Cycling: Convenient abilities like land cycling, island cycling, and swamp cycling, which allow players to search their library for specific land types, will also be included.

Japanese players will have an additional incentive to pick up booster boxes of the new MTG x Final Fantasy set, as all purchases from official stores and online retailers (excluding convenience stores), will receive 1 of 3 Japan exclusive promo cards.
The three cards will be:
- Fatalism (Mystic Denial) (Common)

- Fatalism Foil Version (Mystic Denial) (Rare)

- Witch’s Foresight (Force of Negation) (Limited to 2,000 copies)

Japanese collectors are guaranteed to get 1 promo card with the purchase of a full booster box, however it’s clear that many will be hoping to receive one of the rarer cards out of the three available.
This “Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY” set promises a unique and exciting experience for fans of both franchises, blending the strategic gameplay of Magic with the beloved characters and iconic moments of Final Fantasy.
