JR East to expand wheelchair assistance services in 2025

JR East is expanding its “JRE Odekake Support” service, a valuable resource for passengers requiring assistance with boarding and disembarking trains.

Previously limited to select lines, this service will now be available on all JR East lines, with the exception of a few stations, starting February 28th 2025.

Passengers can now conveniently apply for assistance online up to 12:00 noon two days prior to their travel date, eliminating the need for in-person requests at the station.

This expansion significantly enhances accessibility for passengers with disabilities, making travel planning more convenient and efficient.

In addition to the expanded “JRE Odekake Support” service, JR East is introducing a pilot program for reserving wheelchair-accessible seats on select express trains.

This service, available through platforms like “Eki-net” will allow passengers to reserve designated wheelchair-accessible seats on the Narita Express (Ofuna/Shinjuku – Narita Airport) and the Shonan-Shinjuku line (Tokyo/Shinjuku – Odawara).

The pilot program, commencing on March 15th 2025, will enable passengers with disabilities, or temporary impairments, that require a wheelchair to secure dedicated seats in advance.

JR East hope that the newly expanded services make travelling more comfortable for those who require them.

Applications for the wheelchair accessible seats on the Narita Express and Shonan-Shinjuku line open on the 15th of February via “Eki-net”, with services to begin from the 15th of March.
