Tokyo Dome City installs over 100 new trash cans
Last Updated on March 15, 2025

The Tokyo Dome will soon be home to over 100 internet connected smart trash cans.
A total of 118 internet enabled smart waste compactors known as “SmaGO” will be installed in the area surrounding the Dome, commonly referred to as Tokyo Dome City, from March 15th 2025.
The installation represents the largest simultaneous deployment of “SmaGO” units in Japan to date. Previous installations have taken place in popular locations such as Nara.

This initiative is part of the “Tokyo Dome City Clean Action” project which aims to enhance waste management efficiency and promote sustainability within the Tokyo Dome complex.
The new trash cans will be sponsored by SMFL, a finance and lending subsidiary of Japanese banking giant Sumitomo Mitsui, who have partnered with the manufacturer Force Tech Corporation to facilitate the widespread installation of “SmaGO” trash cans.
These “SmaGO” waste compactors utilize solar panels for power generation and compress any waste deposited in them to approximately one-fifth of the original volume.

This means that they can contain 5 times as much waste as standard trash cans of the same size.
The devices are equipped with internet communication capabilities, allowing for real-time monitoring of waste accumulation levels and operational status.
The current “Tokyo Dome City Clean Action” project builds upon Tokyo Dome City’s existing environmental programs, which include the deployment of “Clean Ranger” staff around the area.

The introduction of “SmaGO” units across the complex will facilitate efficient waste management, improve waste sorting practices, and enhance the overall visitor experience by providing a cleaner environment.
The trash cans will be located in the Tokyo Dome City area which includes the Tokyo Dome stadium, the Tokyo Dome City Attractions area, the LaQua spa and Korakuen Hall.
