Wanted: Ripped Luffy cosplayers! Tokyo’s One Piece gym invites anime fans to compete in new contest
The One Piece Fitness BragMen gym in Tokyo’s Shibuya district isn’t a temporary promotional event. It’s a permanent, One Piece-themed fitness center that’s been operating since 2023.
To celebrate its second anniversary, the gym is launching the “One Piece Body Make Contest, Presented by BragMen”, a bodybuilding competition with a unique twist.
Contestants will be judged in two categories: “One Piece elements” and “Body make elements”.
“One Piece elements” assesses how well they embody the series’ protagonist, Luffy. This includes posing inspired by the manga and anime, replicating Luffy’s signature denim shorts and straw hat look, and capturing his overall spirit.
“Body make elements” focuses on traditional bodybuilding criteria: muscle mass, definition, skin and hair condition, and even the contestant’s smile.
The application process requires six photos: front and back views, a “spirit charging pose,” a “Gear 2 pose,” a “Gum-Gum Gatling pose,” and a free pose.
Male applicants aged 18 and over have until April 30th to submit their entries.
A panel comprised of representatives from One Piece Fitness BragMen, Weekly Shonen Jump (the manga’s publisher), and Muscle Gate (a Gold’s Gym-affiliated bodybuilding contest association) will select finalists.
These finalists will receive free access to the One Piece Fitness BragMen gym until May 31st to prepare for the final competition in Kawasaki on June 1st.
Participants will also be gifted a “WANTED!” style poster of themselves posing as Luffy, with the top 3 contestants also provided with a frame to commemorate their acheivement.
If you’re a One Piece fan who has been inspired to enter the contest, complete entry details are available on the application form website.
