Komeda Coffee looks to crown Japan’s chocolate champion as Kit Kat takes on Black Thunder

Two of Japan’s favorite chocolate snacks will battle it out in a new coffee chain collab this spring.

Komeda Coffee will be hosting a battle between Yuraku Confectionary’s ‘Black Thunder’ and Nestlé’s “Kit Kat”, with each chocolate set to be available as a topping for one of Komeda’s most popular sweet dishes.

The Shiro-Noir, a type of layered danish pastry topped with soft serve ice-cream, will be the battlefield for this contest, with new ‘Black Thunder’ and ‘Kit Kat’ topped Shiro-Noir joining the Komeda Coffee menu for a limited time.

Let’s take a closer look at both of the contestants in this clash of chocolate titans:

Black Thunder Shiro-Noir

Black Thunder, a crunchy chocolate snack made by Yuraku Confectionary, is known for its cookie-like texture that also features crispy biscuit pieces, all encased in delicious chocolate.

The Black Thunder Shiro-Noir deconstructs the original chocolate, with a ‘Black Thunder spread’ placed between the two layers of pastry, before it’s topped with a ‘Black Thunder sauce’.

A generous amount of soft-serve is placed atop the sauce, before the finishing touches of cocoa flavored cookies and biscuit pieces are sprinkled over the entire dessert.

Kit Kat Shiro-Noir

Nestlé’s Kit Kat is synonymous with Japan, with the country having a variety of weird and wacky flavors that are popular with locals and tourists alike.

A ‘Kit Kat spread’ is generously applied to the center of the two layers of Danish pastry, before a rich sauce made using Nestlé’s signature chocolate is drizzled over the top.

It wouldn’t be a Shiro-Noir without soft-serve, and this time the ice-cream is sprinkled with bite-sized Kit Kat’s and crushed feuilletine pieces.

Both the Black Thunder and Kit Kat Shiro-Noir will be available to eat in or take-out, priced at 930 yen each for take-out or 990 yen for eat in orders (tax included).

A mini size of each Shiro-Noir will be available for 730 yen for take-out orders, or 790 yen for eat in orders.

Komeda Coffee stores across Japan will begin serving the new Shiro-Noir from April 24th 2025, with sales expected to end on an as yet undetermined date in early June.

Daily availability will be limited at each store, so you’ll need to head to Komeda Coffee early in the day if you want to take part in this contest between two of Japan’s most beloved chocolate snacks.
