Gundam light show to take over Tokyo’s night sky
Last Updated on April 18, 2025

A new light show will take place at one of Tokyo’s most popular sightseeing spots.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, located in Shinjuku Ward, has been holding a host of projection mapping events under the ‘TOKYO Night and Light’ brand over the last year.

The latest project in this series of events has been announced and will be based on the iconic mecha anime series Gundam.
The Gundam franchise is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, with a range of collaboration projects, such as a partnership with popular virtual singer Hatsune Miku, currently taking place.
The series is also prominently featured at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, with the GUNDAM FUTURE NEXT PAVILION being available to visit until the end of the Expo in October.

The “TOKYO Night and Light” program has been recognized by Guinness World Records as “the largest permanent exhibition of projection mapping on a building”.
Previous ‘TOKYO Night and Light’ events have seen illuminations based on Pac-Man and the history of the city of Tokyo light up the exterior of the Metropolitan Government building.

The new event, which will run from late April, will be based on the concept of “TOKYO GUNDAM IN THE FUTURE”.
The show will follow a story where mobile suits, which were once used as weapons, are now used by everyone to further the development of outer space.

In the story, while mobile suit users carry out work to remove floating debris, a light suddenly appears… but will it be a friend or foe?
The projection mapping will see Gundam mobile suits appear on the side of the 797 foot tall Metropolitan Government Building, in a show that is sure to be engaging for both those unfamiliar with the Gundam series, as well as hardcore fans.
The “TOKYO GUNDAM IN THE FUTURE” projection mapping at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building will start on the 26th of April and run until the 6th of May, before taking a short break and returning from the 10th of May until an as yet undecided end date.
Performance times will be 7pm/8pm and 9pm on April 26th to 6th May, before changing to 7.30pm/8.30pm and 9.30pm from the 10th of May onwards.
For full information, the official website of the ‘TOKYO NIGHT AND LIGHT’ project will be updated with regular information regarding the event.
