Sakura shrimp is the star of popular tempura chains spring menu

Tendon & Tempura Honpo Santen are celebrating the arrival of spring with a range of new Sakura Shrimp dishes.

The “Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Fair” event will see 8 new items added to their menu, consisting of 4 new meals and 4 individual “al la carte” items.

Customers can experience the seasonal flavors of Spanish mackerel from Nagasaki Prefecture, as well as Sakura Shrimp tempura.

Sakura Shrimp is known for its delicate sweetness and subtle floral aroma and is deep-fried to achieve a light, crispy texture.

The Spanish mackerel, sourced from Nagasaki Prefecture, is prized for its rich, fatty flesh and succulent flavor.

Deep-fried Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Tempura Bowl

This bowl also includes bamboo shoots, chrysanthemum, shrimp and lotus root tempura as well as a three-color dango tempura skewer.

The Deep-fried Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Tempura Bowl will cost 890 yen (approx. $5.94 USD / £4.69 GBP).

The Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Tempura are also available as part of a classic Japanese set meal.

The set meal contains the same tempura items as the tendon bowl: Sakura Shrimp, Spanish Mackerel, bamboo shoots, chrysanthemum, shrimp,lotus root and a three-color dango skewer.

This set meal includes rice, spinach and shellfish miso soup as well as grated daikon radish dissolved in the restaurant’s signature tempura sauce which you can dip your tempura into.

The rice bowl will also be refilled once free of charge during your meal.

The Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Tempura Set Meal will cost 1,140 yen (approx. $7.62 USD / £6.01 GBP).

If you prefer to enjoy your tempura without rice or the extras of a set meal, you can order a tempura assortment, priced at 790 yen (approx. $5.28 USD / £4.16 GBP), which contains the same tempura items as the set meal/tendon bowl but is only accompanied by the grated daikon radish.

Sakura Shrimp Tempura Soba/Udon

Noodle enthusiasts can enjoy the new Sakura Shrimp Tempura with either Soba or Udon.

Regardless of which noodle type is ordered, you will be served sakura shrimp and onion tempura, alongside shrimp and okra tempura. Each bowl will also include nori (seaweed) and scallions/spring onions.

The Sakura Shrimp Tempura with either Soba or Udon will cost 690 yen (approx. $4.61 USD / £3.63 GBP).

A La Carte Items

As with most tempura restaurants, Tendon & Tempura Honpo Santen allows customers to order individual pieces of tempura.

As part of the “Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Fair” event, customers can now order the following items:

Sakura Shrimp and Onion Tempura – 200 yen (approx. $1.33 USD / £1.05 GBP)

Spanish Mackerel Tempura – 230 yen (approx. $1.53 USD / £1.21 GBP)

Bamboo Shoot Tempura – 180 yen (approx. $1.20 USD / £0.94 GBP)

Spring Chrysanthemum Tempura – 100 yen (approx. $0.66 USD / £0.52 GBP)

Tendon & Tempura Honpo Santen is also offering a special discount through its official mobile app.

Customers can get 30 yen off with the Santen app

App users can access a 30 yen (approx. $0.20 USD / £0.15 GBP) discount coupon applicable to all of the new tempura bowl and set meals.

The “Sakura Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel Fair” menu is available from Thursday, February 27th until Wednesday, April 2nd.

It will be available at all Tendon & Tempura Honpo Santen locations in the Kansai (Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Kyoto, Shiga, Tokushima) and Chubu (Aichi) regions.

Takeaway options are available for the tempura bowl and set meal, allowing customers to enjoy their favorite dishes at home. However, the sakura shrimp tempura soba/udon meals are not available for takeaway.
