Unraveling the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt
Last Updated on March 27, 2025

Event Overview
The Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo is hosting a temporary exhibition showcasing a selection of artifacts from the extensive Egyptian collection of the Brooklyn Museum, one of the most substantial in the United States.
Titled “Unraveling the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt,” the exhibition presents approximately 150 historical objects that illuminate the sophisticated culture of ancient Egyptian civilization.

Visitors to the exhibition will encounter a focused exploration of ancient Egyptian life, with emphasis on facets that have often received less attention in prior presentations.
The exhibition is structured into three distinct thematic sections.
The initial section provides insights into the everyday existence of ancient Egyptians, detailing their living conditions, dietary practices, occupational activities, personal grooming, and methods of raising children, while also drawing parallels to contemporary life.

The second section centers on the pharaohs, presenting artifacts associated with twelve rulers spanning the 3,000-year dynastic period, including prominent figures such as King Khufu and Ramses II.
This segment explores their power and prestige through representations of monumental architecture, such as pyramids and temples, and incorporates recent scholarly findings regarding pyramid construction and their original appearance.

The concluding section examines ancient Egypt’s beliefs concerning the afterlife, featuring human and animal mummies, elaborate funerary objects, and burial artifacts, offering an in-depth look at ancient Egyptian concepts of mortality, resurrection, and the world beyond.
A range of related merchandise will be available within the exhibition space.
Following its presentation in Tokyo, the exhibition is scheduled to travel to the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art and the Toyota City Museum in Aichi Prefecture.
