Event Overview

Ueno Park is one of Tokyo’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spots and was founded when Tenkai, the founder of Kan’ei-ji Temple transplanted cherry trees from Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture.

The Ueno Sakura Festival is held every year from late March to early April. It has been selected as one of the 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan, and you can see cherry trees that originated in Ueno Onshi Park, such as Kanzakura, Somei-Yoshino, Komatsuotome, and Ueno Shirayukidare.

During the festival a cherry blossom viewing space is set up and the park is bustling with visitors, who gather to enjoy the Japanese custom of Hanami (cherry blossom viewing), to view the beautiful blossom and celebrate spring with picnics.

After sunset lanterns are lit up on the cherry trees in the park, and the cherry trees along the roadside of Shinobazu Pond are also lit up.

Various events are held throughout the festival including dances, a flower market in the grounds of Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple, an open-air antique market by the pond, and a cherry blossom festival at Takenodai Square (Fountain Square) with a produce exhibition of more than 50 stores, including local goods from Ueno.

Ueno Park is most conveniently accessed from Ueno Station by taking the Ginza Line, Hibiya Line, Utsunomiya Line, Takasaki Line, Yamanote Line, Joban Line or the Keihin-Tohoku Line.
