What to expect at Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition 2024

Fireworks manufacturers from all around Japan compete for industry recognised awards at this festival of fireworks.

2024 marks the 93rd Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition.

The event will take place in 2 parts, with competition fireworks across 7 different categories followed by an entertainment fireworks display.

Over the evening approximately 20,000 fireworks will be launched in total.

The competition aims to provide spectators with the opportunity to enjoy fireworks and to improve the skills of fireworks manufacturers, as well as contribute to the development of tourism, commerce, and industry in Tsuchiura.

The event was first held in 1925 by Akimoto Baimune (the 24th head priest of Shinryuji Temple in Tsuchiura City), who invested his own money to hold the competition by Lake Kasumigaura.

The intention of the first competition was to commemorate the deaths of the Naval Air Corps and bring a boost to Tsuchiura City’s economy, which was in recession following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.

With the fireworks event being held in autumn it also serves as a celebration of harvest time and the hard work of the farming community.
