Event Overview
In Nagano the New Year celebrations continue on after January 1st with the festival of Togakushi Dondo-Yaki.
The Togakushi Dondo-Yaki Festival is a vibrant celebration that marks the end of the holiday season in Japan. Like many Dondo-Yaki festivals, its core purpose is to symbolically release the past year’s fortunes and invite good luck for the year ahead.
This unique festival goes beyond the traditional burning of old decorations, charms, and daruma dolls.
The festival features a lively parade where hundreds of participants carry flaming torches creating a mesmerizing spectacle, the sounds of Taiko drums resonate in the dark night, as if driving away evil spirits and a dazzling fireworks display illuminates the winter landscape, adding to the festive atmosphere.
To combat the winter chill, attendees are treated to complimentary glasses of hot sake, while the ritual tasting of red and white mochi is believed to bring good fortune and further welcome the new year.
