What to expect at Shinjuku Tori-no-ichi Fair III 2024

With it’s brightly decorated Kumade (decorative rakes) and other lucky charms, Tori no Ichi or “The Festival of the Rooster” is one of Japan’s most recognisable festivals taking place in late autumn.

The festival is held over multiple days known as “rooster days”. These days are chosen for their auspicious nature according to the lunar calendar.

Depending on the year, there can be either 2 or 3 “rooster days” in November. In 2024, the festival will be held over 3 such days.

Kumade are sold by many vendors at the festival and are believed to bring good fortune and financial prosperity to the buyer.

Stall holders will bless the buyer with a clapping ritual each time a Kumade is purchased, signifying thanks and blessings and to add more luck to the charm.

The size and scale of Kumade vary from small, simple displays that cost a couple of thousand yen, up to huge elaborately decorated examples that cost millions of yen.

Records show that the Tori no Ichi tradition dates as far back as the 1600’s and has been kept as a yearly tradition ever since to bring prosperity, ward off evil and prepare for the coming new year.
