Event Overview
On Setsubun, a ritual is held to ward off evil spirits and bring in good fortune.
At Ryugen-ji Temple Setsubun festival in Kyoto, the event starts with goma sticks containing worshippers wishes and names being burnt in ceremonial containers.
Later, a ceremony is performed and beans are thrown at oni (demons) by those attending to purify and drive away evil spirits. Misfortune and bad health are banished along with the spirits.
Worshippers should eat roasted soybeans after the ceremony, one for each year of their life, to bring good luck for the coming year.
You can purchase packs of beans at this festival that contain lottery tickets for prizes donated by sponsoring companies and worshippers.
The festival activities will take place at the following times:
12:00~13:30 – Goma stick burning
14:00~15:00 – Oni ceremony and bean-throwing ceremony
15:00~16:00 – Lottery prize exchange (lottery tickets obtained by purchasing beans)
