Nagasaki Tall Ships Festival
Last Updated on March 27, 2025

Event Overview
Nagasaki is recognized as a city possessing a significant international history. Under the direction of the Tokugawa Shogunate, it became Japan’s second city to establish global trade relations and served as the nation’s sole port for international commerce from 1639 to 1859.
During the period of national isolation, Nagasaki Port functioned as the only open trade gateway within the country.

The Nagasaki Tall Ships Festival began in 2000, established to commemorate the extended history of trade between Japan and The Netherlands.
Throughout the festival’s duration, Nagasaki Harbor will host a number of tall ships, easily distinguished by their characteristic white sails.

Festival attendees will have the opportunity to examine the ships at close proximity and participate in various activities held within the Nagasaki Seaside Park.
At night, the sailing vessels, adorned with flags and electric lights, are illuminated, and their fantastical beauty is reflected upon the sea’s surface, captivating spectators with a backdrop of firework displays taking place after sunset.

Individuals are invited to experience the scenery of Nagasaki’s historical era within an environment reminiscent of Nagasaki Port during the time when sailing ships frequently traversed its waters.
It may prove intriguing to contemplate the sentiments of those who were present when the port initially opened, as they anxiously awaited the arrival of the sailing ships to arrive.
