Kumamoto Castle cherry blossom illuminations now underway

Kumamoto’s annual cherry blossom event will see areas of the city lit up each evening.

The illuminations are part of “Kyushu Gassai”, which has been held since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes with the intent to promote regional unity and recovery.

The cherry blossom illumination event will light up the cherry blossom trees lining the Sakura-namiki Avenue, situated in front of the Kumamoto Castle Chofu Wall.

The festival’s central theme is “Let’s connect Kyushu! Let’s unite our hearts,” and it aims to strengthen community bonds and generate positive momentum during the spring cherry blossom season.

The illumination will bathe the cherry trees along the Kumamoto Castle Chobei-mae street in light, creating a nighttime spectacle.

The light display is designed to evoke a sense of peace and hope among attendees.

The organizers hope that the event will contribute to a broader sense of optimism throughout the Kyushu region.

• Weather Policy: The event will proceed regardless of weather conditions, except in cases of severe weather, which may lead to cancellation.

The “Sakura Jyuji Sakura Illumination 2025” photo contest will also be held by the Sakura Jyuji Group, a healthcare company sponsoring the event.

Participants are encouraged to submit photographs of the illuminated cherry blossoms for a chance to win prizes.
